Salvia Divinorum is the sacred plant of the shamans of the Maltec Indian tribe of Mexico. The plant is very unusual in many respects. It grows naturally nowhere else except in the Oaxca region of the Sierre Madre mountain range, the territory of the Maltec Nation. The plant is also unusual in that it is a cultigen. A cultigen produces no seeds or rhizomes. It can only reproduce with the help of man. Thusly, there is a symbiotic relationship between this plant and the Maltec nation. The Maltecs have hidden their secret gardens in the ravines of the Sierre Madres for thousands of years. It was not until the late 1960s that the Maltec shared their secret with a visiting anthropologist. The Maltec call the plant Ska Maria and believe the plant has the spirit of the Earth mother. Indeed, it is commonly reported that people enjoying the herb have a vision of a female deity. Salvia comes in three forms: natural leaf, tincture and extracts of varying strengths. Extract strength is noted by how many times concentrated it is over natural dried leaf. For example 5x would be 5 times stronger than natural leaf, etc. Delivery and Dose: There are only three methods that can be used: smoking, tincture and quid chewing. 1) Smoking - the active ingredient of Salvia vapourizes at a very high temperature, therefore, to achieve maximum effect, it is important to use a torch lighter and a water pipe. While inhaling the flame of the torch is kept directly upon the leaves or extract. The smoker tries to inhale all in one breath. Small quantities are used. 2) Tincture - the leaves can be soaked in alcohol for a couple of days, then the alcohol is swished around in the mouth, particularly under the tongue for up to 30 minutes. The active ingredient is absorbed through the lining of the mouth. Once the tincture is swallowed the active ingredient is destroyed by stomach acid and has no further effect. 3) Quid chewing - 50 to 70 fresh leaves, or dried leaves soaked in water are chewed for 30 minutes. The leaves are then spat out. This is the method traditionally employed by the Maltec. However, it should be noted that the leaves have a very disagreeable taste and few Westerners are able to chew them for as long as is necessary. Effects: Salvia is the strongest natural hallucigenic know to man. Its effects are sudden. Often the user drops the water pipe and lighter (a good reason not to use a blow torch!). When smoked the hallucination last for between 5 to 15 minutes. An after effect of giddiness and lack of cordination can last for an hour to an hour and a half afterwards. Reportedly, it has some long lasting effect on the alleviation of depression. When absorbed through the mouth by chewing or by tincture, the hallucination can last for 30 minutes to an hour.
